Brit Week Party

I was walking my dog Betsy yesterday afternoon, minding my own business when I spotted a woman across the street who was spraying her hair with hair spray.  She smiled and introduced herself as Sherry, and then I turned to my left to see a huge tent in front of a home down the street.  She said there was going to be a little party, and I said it looks like a big party to me.  She indicated that she was doing publicity for the party, and I could attend if I got dressed up.  Seeing that I didn’t have anything else to do, I considered going.  After deciding that it was close enough to my house and could be interesting, I got dressed up and returned to the house.  It was a party celebrating “Brit Week” at the home of the British Consul, one of a number of consul’s homes in the neighborhood.  There was a red carpet, tons of people, cameras, and an air of excitement.  Sherry saw me, and ushered me into the party.  There must have been 300+ people there.  The drinks and food were flowing.  It took me awhile to get comfortable and meet people, given that I didn’t know anyone there.  I had an interesting conversation with a scientist from Caltech about the future of the human brain, and really enjoyed the sampling of fish and chips, bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie, and bread pudding.  The food was really good.  I saw Mayor Villaragosa with a group of people, and other celebs I didn’t recognize.  I’m glad I went, it was fun, and quite an adventure.  It made me realize that though British food gets a bad rap, when you are hungry and it’s done right, it’s quite tasty.  Even though I was a bit uncomfortable at first, after a couple of glasses of wine I relaxed and got into the spirit.
